caso.

November, 1968 – arrived in Lima, Peru after political upheaval in Panama.
Found a place to stay in a pension while exploring Lima
One day, while walking down the street in Lima, I found that Alejo was not beside me but was several steps behind, embracing an old friend that he knew while working for OAS – Rene Pereira, an artist-sculptor. Thanks to that fortunate encounter, Rene and his brothers, Cesar and Salvador, introduced Alejo to other artists, writers, and musicians in Lima, including the house band at the Hotel Bolivar where Alejo found work that enabled us to move into a regular apartment.
The hotel band played for a number of local and visiting acts, including the dancers from a local television program, El Show d’Elena. I went to watch a rehearsal for that act, met the central figure of the show, Elena Cortez, and found work myself dancing on that weekly program. Alejo made several guest appearances on the show during our stay in Lima.
Around the middle or end of 1969-1970, Alejo met Jaime Delgado Aparicio, a pianist, composer, and arranger of jazz who was forming a jazz band for club work in Lima. Jaime was educated at the Berklee School of Music in the United States. The group consisted of piano (Jaime), bass (Eduardo Arbe), drums (Alejo), trombone, trumpet and French horn – a compelling brass sound. The trombone and horn players were musicians from the U.S. who were playing with the Lima Symphony and playing jazz at night for fun. The band recorded several records and entertained the public from Lima and foreigners who enjoyed jazz.
After several months, however, the club closed and at that point we decided to try to make our way to the U.S. where Alejo could pursue his love of jazz.
We went to Costa Rica and stayed with Alejos mother, Carmen, while getting the arrangements made to make the trip to the States.
While in Costa Rica, Alejo reunited briefly with an old friend and colleague, Narciso Sotomayor and formed a rock and jazz group.
We left Costa Rica in early 1970, and my family in Chicago helped us to get our bearings, including membership in the Chicago Musicians Union for Alejo, driver’s license, and knowing the way around the city. I found work that supported the rent for an apartment closer to the center of town, and Alejo’s musical expertise flourished in Chicago.
I have included 2 links to information about Elena Cortez and Jaime Delgado
